In today’s world, your smile can be one of the first impressions you make on that job interview, that new main squeeze, or that friend you’ve not seen since high school. Having the best smile you can is a priority. Veneers are one way to help your smile’s appearance as well as help your teeth and can be done right at Cowden Family Dental. Read on to find out more about veneers and how they help.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are very thin shells that are tooth-colored and will cover the surface area of your teeth. These are bonded to your teeth so that you can have your tooth’s shape, color, and size altered. Typically they are made with resin composite material or with porcelain.
Differences Between Porcelain and Resin Veneers
Resin veneers are thinner and do not have to have as much of the tooth’s surface removed before bonding. Porcelain veneers resist stains better and reflects the light like a normal tooth, therefore looking more natural. Talking with us about each type of veneer and your goals, we can determine which of these are best suited for your unique case.
What Dental Issues Veneers Can Fix
There are several issues where veneers can help. Some of these include chipped teeth, worn teeth, broken teeth, teeth are misshapen, teeth with gaps, discolored teeth, and uneven teeth. Veneers can make these type of teeth appear straight, even, and whiter. They work very well in taking teeth that have yellowed some through the years, with small chips and cracks, and making them look like they belong on a Hollywood set. Ask us to see before and after shots of how well veneers can alter your tooth’s appearance.
The benefits to getting veneers mean a more natural tooth appearance. The color can be altered, so your teeth will be whiter than before. Porcelain veneers are tolerated very well by the gums, another huge plus. And they usually do not need extensive shaping like crowns do.
Veneer Life Expectancy
You can expect your new veneers to last about five to ten years before needing replacement. Several things can alter this, and a good talk with us can tell you all the things to do to extend the life of your veneers. You should try to avoid stain-causing drinks and food such as red wine and coffee. Talk with us to give you the best lifestyle choices for veneers.
The Veneer Process
There will be three visits in total for the entire veneer process. The first visit will be your consultation where we talk about it. The second visit will be where we go in and make the veneers, getting them shaped right for your teeth. Lastly, the third visit is where those veneers are bonded to the teeth and you are out the door with your new beautiful teeth.
- First Visit – There will be a consult and we’ll see how well you are a candidate for the process. We’ll talk over the pros and cons, and see how to best give you the smile you’re wanting.
- Second Visit – At this visit there will be impressions and imaging done so that your mouth and teeth are mapped out. These impressions are made in a lab, so its important that we take our time at this stage.
- Third Visit – We’ll remove a bit of the tooth’s enamel so that we can bond the veneer to the tooth. You may get a numbing agent for all this. We’ll match the veneer up to your tooth prior to bonding to make sure that it is correct. Then we are going to position it and attach it with a dental cement. It will cure quick and you are going to be able to see the final results as soon as we are done. We’ll adjust anything that is out of place, check your bite with the new veneers, and make sure that everything is in the proper alignment.
