Visits to your Rio Rancho Dentist help you have great oral health.
From your first visit and throughout your continued care, you will have reasons to smile.
Preventative dentistry emphasizes the importance of ongoing hygiene procedures and daily practices to prevent tooth decay and other dental diseases and conditions. Effective preventative dentistry combines at-home oral care by patients with chairside treatments by dental professionals.
Dr. Cowden and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommend a minimum of two dental checkups each year for professional cleaning and management of any developing conditions. Adhering to this recommendation can help stop dental disease in its earliest stages, protecting your smile and limiting your expense.
Preventive Dentistry Services:
New Patient Exam – Each new patient exam includes a full mouth exam, x-rays, periodontal charting, and an oral cancer screening.
We want you to enjoy getting to know our doctor and staff and be comfortable at all times. A pleasant, comfortable first visit builds trust and helps put you at ease during future dental visits. The doctor and staff will explain everything in detail and will answer any questions you have. Please feel free to discuss any fears or anxiety you may have with the office team.
We will record your dental and medical history, complete a comprehensive examination including digital x-rays and an oral cancer screening, and discuss any findings with you. We will also review the importance of maintaining a good dental health program to ensure a healthy and beautiful smile for life!
This is without question the most important appointment you and Dr. Cowden will have. Many of the disappointments individuals have with dentistry can be traced back to an incomplete evaluation and diagnosis.
Cleanings/Prophylactic Treatment – Regular dental checkups are an important part of maintaining oral health. We offer regular cleanings as well as deep cleanings, called scaling and root planing, based on the recommendation of the dentist. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that every patient receive a prophylaxis (cleaning) at least every six months. However, there are circumstances in which cleanings may be recommended every three to four months.
Child Exam & Cleanings – Our service includes a full mouth exam, x-rays (when permitted by child), and cleaning. Your child will love our Kids Cove with movies & Wii, toys and books! We also use nitrous oxide (when approved by parent/guardian), and we can sometimes avoid using shots! We promise to make your child’s visit as comfortable as possible.
Sealants – Dental sealants are a protective coating that is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant protects the tooth from getting a cavity by shielding against bacteria and plaque. Sealants are most commonly placed on children’s permanent teeth because they are more prone to cavities.
Fluoride – Fluoride is a compound that contains fluorine, a natural element. Fluoride inhibits loss of minerals from tooth enamel and encourages remineralization (strengthening areas that are weakened and beginning to develop cavities). Fluoride also affects bacteria that cause cavities, discouraging acid attacks that break down the tooth. Risk for decay is reduced even more when fluoride is combined with a healthy diet and good oral hygiene.
Limited Dental Exams – These are problem-focused exams for a specific tooth or area of the mouth that is causing pain or concern. Treatment on the specific area can oftentimes be completed the same day if desired.
Athletic Mouthguards – Custom fit to your teeth, these guards can help avoid dental trauma which may occur during athletic events.
Night Guards – We offer a clear night guard for use while sleeping to alleviate clenching or grinding during the night. Clenching or grinding of the teeth can lead to excessive wear of the teeth or other jaw disorders, such as TMJ disorders.
